Is this your Sleep Oasis?
Hello all – thank you for stopping by Bedrooms by Nancy. Interior Decorating has been something I played with from an early age. During Saturday chores, I would move the furniture around in the living room. There were some hits, and misses, the flow of the room wouldn’t work, so then I would try another plan. This remained interesting into my college days, rearranging furniture for my friends.
For my first home, I shared an apartment with a friend. She had a big couch, entertainment center and living room furniture so there wasn’t any play in the living room. So my bedroom reaped the reward of my creativity.
I didn’t sleep well last night
At work, I would hear conversations saying “I’m so tired, I didn’t sleep well last night”. We’ve all heard someone say it and probably yourself too. I would ask “have you decorated your bedroom for a space to unwind”? Boy, did I get laughed at. I heard answers like, mine has a treadmill, TV, desk, file cabinet, and so on. Clearly not a “work free zone”. I would suggest moving the desk, but was told “there isn’t any other space in the house for my desk”. Ok, I understand, so I would make the suggestion of taking a shower if that’s relaxing, try some Aromatherapy body lotion, and an Oil Diffuser. I was still laughed at and heard the same conversation again and again.
One of my work friends was going shopping for a new bedspread and I accompanied her. She was looking for the cheapest in the clearance bin. You can just guess the selection of the sale comforters and bedding. I encouraged her to pick a design and colors that would help her create a relaxing retreat. She reluctantly bought a new sheet set in colors that she identified as relaxing, and put the comforter on layaway.
In a few weeks, she finally admitted that she was sleeping better, and asked me if I had any more ideas for her bedroom.
Pillows
As you know, sleep can be the hardest thing to find sometimes, and especially when you really need a good night’s sleep. Everyone is different, someone may like to fall asleep with the TV on, others need silence, same thing with lights. So there are so many variables, what works for one, might not help someone else.
That is what keeps this goal a challenge. There are so many factors, something simple like your pillow, is it supporting your head in the positions you sleep, do you need a different type pillow. When I look at bed pillow displays, there are ones for side sleeper, back sleeper, Down feather pillows, memory foam, and on and on. Can you tell from the quick touch at the store that “Yes, this is it!”? Sadly, most time’s no.
So then the question is “I bought a new pillow, why am I not sleeping?”
That’s what I want to help with.

This is very interesting and I am looking forward to reading your suggestions. I love redecorating various rooms in our home and have a habit of painting, re-arranging various rooms whenever my husband was away. It got to the point that when he left on a deployment the first thing the kids would ask is “So what room are you painting Mom?” This continues even now that they are grown. I did our bedroom a few years ago but am looking forward to ideas for improving it or even changing it altogether. Excitedly looking forward to more ideas from you.
Thank you Deb. I had to laugh at your redecorating when your husband would be gone, lol 😁. What is your favorite style or what are you looking to change? Thanks for your comment.
I don’t think it’s so much a favorite style but just something calming, relaxing and peaceful oasis. Of course a budget is something I always have to keep in mind as well. You are very welcome Nancy.
Take care
