Many of us spring-clean, repaint the walls to freshen up our living spaces, clean windows until they sparkle, add new furniture. But when was the last time you considered how modern window treatments could add new life to your bedroom?
You will be surprised at the number of options for bedroom window treatments. Think about lush billowing sheers draping around hard corners of square windows while allowing outside light to filter through. Perhaps you desire privacy and room darkening.
Whether you favor curtains, roller blinds, shades, or screens, the latest bedroom window treatment trends are diverse enough to please everyone.
Blinds – Wood, Faux Wood, Fabric, Plastic, Composite
There are many kinds of window blinds, using different systems and materials. A typical window blind is made with slats of fabric, wood, faux wood, plastic, or composite.
They can adjust by rotating from slightly open, halfway open, to completely open position to a closed position with vertical or horizontal slats. If you’re looking for a more economical option, consider faux wood or composite materials.

Cellular Shades
Cellular Shades are one of the most versatile and innovative window coverings in today’s market. These shades feature a unique pleated honeycomb construction to provide both fashion and superior energy efficiency.
Raise and lower the shade as needed for light control and privacy with a pull cord, cordless feature or motorized options. No cord holes are visible. The durable, washable, polyester fabric is available in a wide range of colors and textures in various cell sizes, and in various opacities, from sheer to total blackout.
Roller Blinds or Shades
Roller Blinds or Shades are sleek, simple, the most versatile window coverings ideas out there, and budget friendly. Their uncomplicated design allows for unlimited possibilities when it comes to fashionable fabrics and materials.
Either choose a neutral, solid color and fabric to tie together the space, or make the shade an accent to the room and choose a bold, attention-getting color or pattern. The design for roller shades is solid and cannot be seen through.
For 2020, floral roller blinds are a big trend. But if the idea of chintzy floral patterns on your blinds has you recoiling in horror, don’t worry. Today’s floral prints are more abstract and subtle. As a result, floral roller blinds can add interest to a room without being overwhelming.

Room Darkening Blinds
Room darkening blinds typically filter between 95 and 99% of all light coming through a window. Because they virtually eliminate all natural light, they are an option for the bedroom.
Blinds paired with Drapes can change your perception
One of the biggest advantages of combining curtains and blinds is how they can change the perception of the size of your windows. This is perfect if your bedroom is small.
A standard size window can be turned into a large one when drapes and blinds are paired well together and your ceiling made to look much taller than it really is. For example, install roman shades a few inches below the ceiling to change the height perception. Then, mantle the curtain rod at the same level as the blinds but extend it 1 to 2 feet beyond the window, thus adding height and width.

Roman Shades
There’s something about the classic style of Roman shade window treatments that brings a flair of style and timeless grace to any room. The beauty of Roman shade window coverings is in their natural flowing layered style that adds dimension and warmth to your bedroom.
Sheer Drapes
Sheer drapes in floaty fabrics are great for controlling natural light without blocking it out entirely.
Pale colors like vanilla, ivory, or soft peach are perfect because they help create a warm glow as light enters your room. For the ultimate dreamy feel, this trend looks even better with floor-to-ceiling drapes. Don’t forget to add a stylish curtain rod to compliment your bedroom decor.
Statement Patterned Curtains
If you’re looking for a way to give your bedroom a lift, boldly printed curtains are a great way to breathe new life into your interiors.
Consider fabrics with a batik or tie-dye pattern for an eclectic look, or opt for unexpected patterns like a coral print or geometric design.
Adding bold curtains to minimal spaces provides character. But statement drapes can work well in expressive rooms too as they help draw your eyes to the windows and surrounding views.
Velvet Curtains
Modern window treatment ideas can also mean putting a modern twist on something that might have once been considered dated.
The velvet curtains of the past were stiff and only available in a limited color palette. But today’s velvets are soft, sumptuous, and definitely worth considering. Since they’re thick, they’re great for blocking out light in a bedroom for a guaranteed good night’s sleep.
Bear in mind that velvet curtains can look baroque if you get this trend wrong. Avoid this by opting for simple, tassel-free velvet curtains in a soft color like dusky pink, or a bold but modern shade of teal.

Color Block Curtains
In design, color blocking refers to the use of contrasting blocks or panels of solid colors. This is popular in the world of fashion when someone pairs a bright blue top with fiery orange pants. But this is also commonly used in interior design to create contrast.
If you’re not afraid of using bold colors in your bedroom, color block curtains are perfect for creating a distinctive look. The concept involves curtains in one block color, but with the middle or base of the curtain in a contrasting color.
This trend works best with long floor-length curtains with plenty of floor space to show off the contrasting edge.
Shutters Gain in Popularity
Shutters are simply one of the most beautiful and traditional ways to enhance any window. This incredible architectural design has impressed our aesthetic needs for centuries.
Shutters do provide ultimate privacy, flexible light control, security and add value and style to your home. For many people, shutters are just the supreme choice for their windows. Shutters never go out of style and blend into every decorating theme.
Shutters alone can look stark and cold, to soften the look of your shutters, add curtains or drapes. Make sure that your curtain rods are long enough to clear the shutters for easy opening and closing.
Pro-tip: If wood shutters are too hard on your wallet, you can achieve a similar look with 2-inch wood blinds.
Rattan Adds Texture

Rattan and wicker furniture are making a big comeback this year. To embrace this trend, add woven wood shades in rattan or bamboo for a textured, casual look. Dozens of weaves and colors are available. If your style is more traditional, adding a contrasting binding tape to a Roman shade helps with formality.
Rattan and woven shades tend to be see-through, depending on their weave. If you don’t want to add a liner (which blocks light completely and is visible from your home’s exterior), installing curtains over your shades adds privacy and softness.
Ordinary to Extraordinary
Changing your window treatments are a great way to give your bedrooms a brand new-look and feel without renovating the entire room. I hope you found one of the top trends in window treatments to use in your Bedroom. The perfect window treatment will take your room from ordinary to extraordinary!

I am a huge fan of Cellular Shades. We are soon in the market for some new blinds and the Cellular shades will be my go to. I love how versatile they are. We have Roman shades right now. They were in when we bought the house. The cord on two of them has broken because they put a lot of pressure on the cord to pull them up. They are probably older so that I’m sure is a factor.
This is inspiring me to get those new blinds!
Thank you Teresa – I’m so glad you are inspired by my post. I hope you find just the perfect Cellular Blinds for your home.

What a pleasantly laid out post. I really enjoyed reading it and learning about the best window treatment for the bedroom windows. I would say the black curtains would be more practical for me as I like the room to be pitch dark when I sleep.
However, I’ve got the horizontal blinds on that are not too great. But your article has given me more ideas to change it in the future.
Thank you
Thank you Habib – I’m glad the article gave you ideas to change your drapes in the future. Black out curtains or blinds are good for a pitch dark bedroom to help you sleep. Good luck with your redecorating.

Hi Nancy. A nice article and quite topical for me. I just engaged my first interior designer to fit out our apartment and we have decided to go for the horizontal wooden shutter style blinds (do you call them blinds or something else?). An off white beach theme so really looking forward to seeing it all come together.
Some great options and ideas though and quite informative. Thanks – Jason.
Thank you Jason – how exciting to have and interior designer to create a beautiful new home for you in a white beach theme. Please share some pics of your home with me, I’d love to see them.
Keep well,
Nancy
Choices, choices 🙂
There is way more than I would think of. Of everything you show I like that rattan one the most. Beautiful!
Thank you Hannie – yes, I’m glad there are so many choices, we all have different tastes, and want our home to reflect our own personalities. I agree with you, the rattan blinds are beautiful.
Keep well,
Nancy

Hey Nancy,
This is just what I was looking for! I just moved into a new home and have no curtains on my bedroom window yet. Although I love natural light coming in to not just my bedroom but my entire home, I like to sleep in complete darkness. Choosing the perfect window covering for my bedroom has been a daunting task, to say the least. But now, since I have read your conveniently listed top 10 window coverings, I am more inclined to making a better decision when it come to what kind of curtain/blinds to look for. I love sheer drapes as they bring such a dreamy feel to any room.. However, due to my sleeping habits, I might as well just go for room darkening blinds paired with drapes.
Thank yu so much for this great information!! 🙂

Hi Nancy, what a nice read! I love interior design and frequently change something in my home. However, windows are equipped with roll up wooden blinds from the outside, which make an excellent protection from rain, sun, snow if you like and excess sunlight as well when it is extremely hot as these days is. Something I’ve never seen anywhere else here in UK. They are just grate!
Anyway, that leaves me only with the possibility of changing the inside decoration of the windows, which I do a lot! I know our next curtain will be some bolder colour, perhaps reddish or terracotta hue, as the walls are pale yellow at the moment, but still do not know whether to chose a patterned one or a plain coloured.
You certainly gave me an inducement to think it through! Thank you!
Hello Minaher – thank you for your comment. I haven’t seen the “outside window equipped roll up wooden blinds”. Are they exposed to the elements? Have fun with your choices of drapery patterns, there are so many to choose from. Please send me a photo when you have your new drapes hung.
Keep well,
Nancy
